Friday December 13th will be the fast of the Tenth of the Month of Tevet. The fast commemorates the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. The event is described in the Tanach in the book of II Kings, and was the beginning of the eventual destruction of the First Temple. Other commemorations that occurred on the Tenth of Tevet include the forced translation of the Torah and Tanach into Greek during the reign of King Ptolemy of Egypt, and the death of Ezra the Scribe. The fast begin at sunrise and ends at sundown.
