Israel, Jordan, PA in Red Sea-Dead Sea Pipeline Pact

Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority are scheduled to sign, Monday, an agreement to bring water from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Dead Sea, according to the Yediot Aharonot daily. Under the agreement, a desalination station will be erected in the Jordanian city of Aqaba, next to Eilat, and the pipeline will provide fresh water to all three entities.

The signing ceremony is slated for the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington, DC. Representing Israel will be Regional Cooperation Minister Silvan Shalom, who told Israel Defense Forces Radio that the pact was an historic breakthrough, explaining that a pipeline is being used instead of the often-discussed canal in order to save costs.
