Ben-Dahan: No Criminal Sanctions Against Draft Evaders

Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan (Jewish Home) said on Sunday that his party was against imposing criminal sanctions on hareidi-religious students who evade army service, but said the party would be willing to consider financial sanctions in certain cases.

"I think we can pass a new draft law that does not contain financial or criminal sanctions,” he told Arutz Sheva, adding, “Anyone familiar with the understandings and agreements that were reached with the hareidi parties in the last Knesset knows that the law that we are bringing forward is much better and more logical than what the hareidi parties agreed to in the previous government. We in the Jewish Home oppose criminal sanctions, and agree to economic sanctions - but only in case someone fails to report to the recruitment center.”
