Cabinet Extends Hareidi Civilian Service by 6 Weeks

The government approved, Sunday, a proposal by Minister Uri Orbach to extend the recruitment of hareidi-religious Jews to civilian national service by a month and a half or until the passage of legislation to provide for such service. The previous mandate finished at the end of November.

Director-General Sar-Shalom Jerbi of the of the National Civilian Volunteer Service welcomed the cabinet vote, explaining, "The hundreds of members of the haredi sector who joined just in the last month proves that hareidi society wants to bear the burden." He added, "I have no doubt that this is the right platform and the proper one for integration of the hareidi sector in contributing to the community and the country, and I'm sure the percentages of recruitment to the civilian service in the hareidi sector will continue and increase."
