Opposition to Bill for Single Chief Rabbi

The Chief Rabbinical Council has announced its opposition to the bill approved Sunday by the Knesset Legislation Committee, "The proposal to set a single position of Chief Rabbi is non-feasible. The issue is not only the need for an Ashkenazic and Sephardic Rabbi, rather the fact that the two Chief Rabbis rotate between positions of President of the Supreme Rabinical Court and President of the Chief Rabbinical Council, in addition to a full schedule of responsibilities, necessitating two full Chief Rabbinical positions," explained Chief Ashkenazic Rabbi David Lau.
