A large menorah in Kiev, Ukraine was lit in a public city square despite massive street demonstrations calling for governmental changes. However other Jewish community events were cancelled.
Rabbi Moshe Asman, a local leader in the Kiev Jewish community spoke to Arutz Sheva news on Monday about the situation. "The atmosphere in the streets is tense," he stated. "We lit the menorah but then had to announce the cancellation of all events and performances. We were supposed to have a rich program," he lamented. Several hundred people arrived for the candle lighting ceremony, despite the danger, although originally thousands were expected.
