Tomorrow 1st Reading of Law to Suspend Indicted Mayors

Tomorrow (Monday) the Knesset will hear the first reading of a bill to expel from office mayors who have been indicted for criminal charges. Under the bill, which was introduced by Minister of Internal Affairs Gidon Sa'ar, a committee headed by a retired District Court judge will determine if suspension is justified according to various parameters such as the seriousness and scope of the offense as well as how much time has elapses since the commission of the offense(s).

"I believe that the bill I am introducing achieves the appropriate balance between the integrity and public confidence in local government and the democratic dimension inherent in the direct election of a public official and the right to be elected," the MK remarked.
