Two construction workers were killed in a tragic accident which occurred today (Wednesday) at the Brazilian stadium which is scheduled to host the FIFA 2014 World Cup Finals.
A senior official from Sao Paolo’s fire and rescue department explained that they had been called to the ‘Arena Corinthians’, following the report of a collapsed crane. The crane had fallen atop of a metal structure, causing the partial collapse of one of the facades.
The arena was already struggling to complete construction by the end of next month in order to meet the FIFA deadline. Brazil has admitted the difficulties it has been undergoing to have all 12 of the venues ready in time.
‘Odebrecht Infrastructure’, the company that is building the stadium, told BBC that “The crane that hoisted the last module of the structure of the metal roof collapsed, causing part of the circulation area of the east building to fall.”
Most of the workers are believed to have been off-site on their lunch breaks at the time.
