Summer Vacation Expected to be Shortened

Minister of Education Rabbi Shai Piron is expected to announce tomorrow (Thursday) a decision to extend the school year by shortening the summer holiday. The plan, which would begin to be implemented this coming summer, would affect children in the first and second grades, eventually to be expanded to include higher grades.

Several months ago, Minister Piron appointed a committee to look into the issue, and its recommendation was to extend the school year to July 21st, providing an additional three weeks of studies than the school year now holds.  Although the Ministry of Education will be covering the bulk of the cost, parents will also be asked to contribute, the amount to be determined in accordance to their socio-economic situation.
