Cabinet Approves Law Suspending Mayors Under Indictment

A short while ago the Israeli Cabinet approved MK Gidon Saar's bill to remove from office city mayors who are under criminal indictment, The bill had been brought forward by the Minister of the Interior following deliberations with representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior and local authorities.

Saar introduced the bill "to reflect a balance between the integrity and public confidence in local government and the democratic dimension inherent in the ability to vote and be elected." The bill was presented following the Supreme Court's recent ruling following the elections of three mayors who are presently facing criminal charges.

The new bill is expected to be brought before the Knesset plenum later this week.
