Former Top Aid Calls Disengagement a Failure

Dov Weisglass, former head of the Prime Minister's Office during the Disengagement from Gaza called the plan a failure. He also lamented the Oslo Accords which created the Palestinian Authority in 1993. He made the comments Wednesday at a conference at Haifa University marking the 20th anniversary of the Accords.

"The reason for the failure of Oslo was the inability of the Palestinians to ensure a feeling of security in the citizens of Israel. Failure to prevent Palestinian violence and terrorist attacks generated a change in Israeli public support," he stated.

As for the 2005 removal of all Jewish civilian and military presence from Gush Katif and other regions of Gaza, he stated, "Israel did everything, and as a result we got the Hamas takeover and firing of rockets into Israel. Thus the public now thinks that the eviction of Gaza was a failure." Weisglass as Prime Minister Sharon's top aid, heavily advocated for the Disengagement in the media.
