Member of Knesset Eitan Cabel (Labor) said on Tuesday that he intends to run for the position of chairman of the Histadrut now that Ofer Eini has announced his resignation. Eini spend eight years as the head of the national labor union. MK Cabel was first elected to Knesset in 1996 and has been a past candidate for head of the Labor party.
The Histadrut General Federation of Laborers in the Land of Israel was established in 1920. Noted past leaders include MK Amir Peretz, now a Knesset Minister, veteran Knesset minister Haim Ramon, and David Ben-Gurion, who helped establish the union and later became Israel's first Prime Minister.
