Abbas: Israel’s Interests are Economic Not Security

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has been looking at “developments” he says may take place in the near future, due to Israel’s “settlement policies”,  saying that to date, negotiations had led nowhere.

Speaking at a meeting of Fatah’s (PLO) Advisory Council in Ramalla, Abbas said, “After all these rounds of negotiations, nothing tangible has been achieved, and the reason particular developments may take place in the near future is because Israel says ‘We (Israel) have released prisoners and cannot deal with its implications, so we will go and expand the building of settlements.'"

Abbas also rejected Israel’s claim that the importance of the Jordan Valley was for security reasons, but for economic reasons.  The Jordan Valley receives $625 million in infrastructure which includes growing dates, man-made  lakes for raising crocodiles, and poultry farms, to name a few.
