The educational system will mark Sigd on Thursday. A series of workshops and tutorials will celebrate the Jewish Ethiopian community. Schools across Israel will hold activities to deepen mutual appreciation and tolerance among students for different members of Israeli society.
The holiday of Sigd commemorates when the Biblical prophets Ezra and Nehemiah led the Jewish people back to Israel from the Babylonian exile. Some historical evidence suggests that at one point in time all Jewish people celebrated Sigd but only the Ethiopian community kept it. Other holidays such as the Moroccan Mimouna and the Kurdish Seharane are also celebrated by select Jewish communities.
