Longtime Nazareth Incumbent Mayor Beaten by 21 Votes

Nazareth mayoral candidate Ali Salam reportedly beat the longtime incumbent mayor by a margin of only 21 votes. He narrowly beat Mayor Ramiz Jaraisi of the Nazareth Democratic Front, a collection of groups headed by the local Communist Party who have been in power since 1975. Ali Salam was a former deputy of Mayor Jaraisi. The Israeli city of Nazareth has a majority Arabic-speaking population, many of which are Christian as opposed to Muslim Arabs. The figures were not finalized by the Ministry of Interior. An additional candidate Hanin Zoabi of the Balad party won 10.4% of the vote. Zoabi is currently a member of Knesset and gained notoriety for travelled aboard the Mavi Marmara flotilla ship to Gaza and various other incidents.
