The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee bade farewell, Monday, to Reserves General Ya'akov Amidror, who is stepping down after 31 months at the helm of the National Security Council. He will be succeeded by Deputy Director Yossi Cohen of the Mossad intelligence agency.
For Amidror it marks the end of 36.5 years of active service to the state. He said, "I was the youngest officer in a forward command post and today I am the oldest at the cabinet table. That says everything about my long term of service." Referring to 90-year-old Shim'on Peres, he added, "The president asked me why I'm retiring. I told him, 'I learned from you , Mr. President. I am retiring at my peak.'"
