About 40,000 students from around the country will go, by the end of the week, on day trips "in the footsteps of the fighters". The program got underway on Sunday, when students met with Chairman Avigdor Kahalani of the Soldiers' Welfare Organization and heard his first-hand account of the Battle of the Bacha Valley (Emek Habacha), next to the Golan Heights, which stopped the Syrian Army during the Yom Kippur War of 1973. The tour also included a visit to an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) exhibition and watching a military exercise.
The project is an initiative of the security-social wing of the Defense Ministry. It's aim is to strengthen the motivation of the youth for induction into the IDF.
