An innovative piece of research being conducted on feelings and brain function at the Tel Aviv Medical Center has found new evidence that patients in a vegetative state respond to emotional stimuli. This is the first piece of evidence which indicates that these patients have some kind of emotional awareness of their surroundings.
“Recognition Disorder and the Vegetative State is a medical condition caused by extensive brain damage. These patients lay in bed, are artificially fed, but breathe on their own and show regular sleep and wakefulness cycles. However, despite these signs or life, these individuals do not respond to external stimuli, such as speech or pain, make no efforts to communicate, and show no sign of their environment or themselves,” the Center noted.
