President Shim'on Peres paid a condolence call, Friday, to the family of First Sergeant Gavriel "Gal" Kobi of the Israel Defense Forces, the victim of a sniper in Hevron on Sunday. REferring to the importance of protecting the Jewish community of Hevron, Peres told Kobi's family, "In the eyes of the state, he is a hero. Your son served at one of the most boiling security points there is and one who is there knows it is a dangerous spot." He also said, "I know it's very difficult to console [someone] when it's such an outstanding child. It's a heartbreaking loss."
Gal's mother, Smadar, showed Peres an album of pictures from her son's military service. She said, painfully, "Gal was the hero of my life, loved life, loved living and was the salt of the earth."
