Torah Scroll Falls: Friday Fast at Ashdod Synagogue

Worshipers at the synagogue of the Shatz hasidim in Ashdod will have to fast on Friday after a Torah scroll fell to the floor during Thursday's Shemini Atzeret/Simhat Torah holiday.

One of the worshipers told Arutz Sheva that the mishap occurred during the traditional auctioning of aliyot (being called up to the reading of the Torah) and other ceremonial honors. The congregation's rabbis ruled that the worshipers will have to fast and do penitence to atone for the moment's lapse in attention that led the scroll to slip and fall.
