The government confirmed, Tuesday morning, a one-year extension of the term of Chief-of-Staff Benny Gantz of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The extension was recommended by Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon.
Ya'alon said that the most important achievement of Gantz's two-and-a-half-years at the helm was "the relative calm along the borders, quiet which is not obvious at a time when the Middle East is going through turmoil and unprecedented upheavals. The calm stems mainly from the IDF's deterrent power. The chief of staff is also leading the process of changes in the IDF, resulting from a change in the nature of threats and challenges, as well as from technological and other opportunities and budgetary constraints."
