The Los Angeles Times has reported that the U.S. and Iran are conducting secret talks that may lead to an opening of channels between them which can lead to direct talks. According to the report, this even has included an exchange of personal letters between President Obama and his Iranian counterpart, President Hassan Rouhani. However, the issue of a nuclear Iran has apparently not yet been touched upon.
So far, the talks have been mainly focused on the Syrian situation. However, these talks could soon expand, as Rouhani is expected to arrive in New York within a week and a half to appear at the U.N. General Assembly.
Administration officials told the Times that a meeting between American and Iranian officials at this time would be the first one in 34 years.
