Israel: No Non-Proliferation Chemical Weapons Agreement

Israel has made it clear that it would not ratify the Non-Proliferation of Chemical Weapons Agreement, due the contacts and arrangements between Russia and Syria for the disposal of Syrian chemical weapons, according to the newspaper, Haaretz.

The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem pointed to the link, made by Russian officials in the last several days regarding the disposal of Syria’s chemical weapons, and Israel’s military capabilities.  Israel had signed the treaty banning chemical weapons in 1993, but it was never ratified by the Knesseet.  According to Haaretz, “The Foreign Ministry has made it clear that the Convention will not be brought before the Knesset for final ratification as long as Israel’s enemies in the region have them.”
