Syria Signs Documents on Joining Chemical Weapons Pact

Representatives of the Syrian government signed documents on Thursday, pertaining to the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad joining the convention for the prevention of the proliferation of chemical weapons. The documents were sent to the United Nations as one of the conditions of the compromise to prevent an attack by the United States in response to the use of chemical weapons in the Damascus area last month.

President Assad made it clear his country would not take steps to calm the situation until the threat of attack is removed. He told Russian television that as long as what he called the American politics of the threats continued, Syria would not part with its chemical weapons and would not cooperate with the West.
