Chairman of the Committee on the Status of Women MK Dr. Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid), today (Wednesday) expressed support for the IDF’s stance that the period of service should be extended for females.
She sees it as an opportunity to correct inequities of the past. According to MK Lavie, “This is a one-time opportunity for us to correct inequalities that have been in the IDF since its inception. The length of the tour should be decided by the profession of the soldier, not the gender. Right now 92% of opportunities in the military are open to women – in theory. But in practice, many are blocked to them due to the fact that men will serve a longer period of time. You must allow equal opportunities for women in the army, even if it will cost more.”
