Haifa Lagging in Polio-Vaccination Percentage

Deputy Mayor Shai Blumenthal of Haifa, who heads the city's health committee, said, Tuesday, that he and Mayor Yona Yahav were examining of expanding the public-awareness effort associated with the national anti-polio campaign in light of Healthy Ministry figures that show only 17 percent of the city's children up to the age of nine have been immunized against the crippling disease. By comparison, he noted that 40 percent of the children in the ministry's northern district had been vaccinated and 30 percent in the Haifa District outside the city, as far south as Hadera.

Blumenthal said, "It's too early to know what the reason is that in Haifa there is such a low rate of parents reporting to vaccination points. The figures show that the phenomenon is particularly evident in the Carmel Ridge area and among hareidi-religious families."
