Rabbis Fight Burning of the Skeletons of French Jews

The Conference of European Rabbis called on relatives of deceased Jews in France, Thursday, to visit and care for the graves of the deceased, so as to minimize the danger that the skeletons of the deceased will be exhumed and burned. An amendment to French law calls on all skeletons to be treated this way if three years pass without a relative visiting or if the period for which the plot is sold expires and is not renewed.

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, the president of the conference, is scheduled to meet in the coming days with Deputy Foreign Minister Manuel Valls to see if there is some constitutional, legal way to solve the problem. He is also asking relatives to re-bury exhumed skeletons or have them sent to Israel for burial.
