Arab Communist Knesset Member Meets with Abbas

Member of Knesset Mohammad Barakeh (Hadash) met with Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Tuesday. At the meeting it was reported that Abbas said Israel was "stacking the obstacles" against the PA by building houses. He said that Israel must refrain from building apartment buildings and homes before negotiations can start.

Following the meeting, MK Barakeh said he believes that Abbas has the ability to sign an agreement with Israel. Such an agreement would ostensibly create an independent Palestinian State within currently held Israel and / or PA held lands.

MK Barakeh is the head of the Hadash party, which contains a mix of both Arab and Jewish members. It was formed out of Maki, The Israeli Communist Party, of which Barakeh was a member, Rakah, the New Communist List, and other like-minded groups.
