It's served the population of Israel since the 1930s, and now, the land on which Sde Dov Airport currently sits will be used for apartment buildings. The official document was signed Wednesday by Finance Minister Yair Lapid, Housing Minister Uri Ariel and Director of the Transportation Ministry Uzi Yitzhaki.
Thousands of housing units are expected to be built on the site. Officials say the move will reduce housing costs and increase the supply of apartments in the high demand coastal region. The airport has mostly been used for smaller domestic flights, with Ben Gurion International Airport handling the rest.
Named after Israeli aviation pioneer Dov Hoz, the site served the country during the Arab riots of the 1930s and during the War of Independence in 1948-1949.
