Report: Ambassador to EU Warned of Sanctions in March

David Walzer, Israel's ambassador to the European Union, warned the Foreign Ministry headquarters in March that the EU had started working on drafts of a recently-disclosed policy not to recognize areas beyond the 1949 cease-fire line as parts of Israel, according to a Friday-morning report by the Ma'ariv daily. The policy effectively results in a cutoff of EU funding and other cooperative efforts with Israeli citizens living in Judea and Samaria (Shomron), the Golan Heights and parts of Jerusalem.

Ambassador Walzer told of his warnings in letters sent to Deputy Foreign Minister Ze'ev Elkin and Ministry Director-General Rafi Barak. Walzer wrote that he continued to send updates on the situation until the end of May.
