Report: MKs Trying to Make Hesder Service Longer

There are additional behind-the-scenes contacts aimed at making changes in the new national-service law, according to a Friday report in the Ma'ariv daily. Those changes include a lengthening to two years of active duty for the hesder yeshiva program, which combines religious studies with military service.

A surprising axis began to form, last week, between coalition and opposition members on the Committee for Equal Burden of Service, whose prominent focus is increased hareidi participation in the military. A secret meeting was held between committee members Ofer Shelah (Yesh Atid), Elazar Stern (Hatenu'a) and Omer Bar Lev (Labor) to discuss controversial items and there were other meetings involving other committee members.
