Haifa Metronit Bus System Starts Testing Friday

The Metronit public-transportation for the Haifa metropolitan area, built around extra-long, battery-driven buses on designated roadways, is scheduled to start a two-week test period on Friday. For the moment, it will not carry passengers.

The focus of the test will be safety and technology, including the integration of the buses on their routes and the functioning of traffic lights and other aspects of the control system. The 1.5-billion-shekel system, including the special lanes and other infrastructure, took six years to develop and build.
