New Chief Rabbis Decide on How to Divide Powers

The Chief Rabbis are the heads of the Chief Rabbinic Council and of the Rabbinic Courts, with each rabbi taking over one of the titles for half of his term as stipulated by law. At that point, the Chief Rabbis will switch with one another.

Israel's newly elected Chief Rabbis met today and agreed that Rabbi David Lau, the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi will head the Council and Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi, will head the Courts for the next five years.

They met in a spirit of cooperation which they intend to continue for the entire ten year term, they reported, sharing information and keeping one another up to date on all developments.
