Hamas Upset with Abbas for Visit to Egypt

At a press conference in Gaza, the ruling Hamas regime condemned the recent meeting between Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and the interim leaders in Egypt. Hamas officials said Abbas had smeared their name in public. Abbas travelled to Egypt this week to meet with the interim leaders of the country who have taken charge following the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi. At the meeting, Abbas criticized Hamas, claiming they were trying to intervene in Egyptian affairs. Additionally he condemned Hamas for responsibility regarding the increase of terrorist attacks taking place in the Egyptian controlled Sinai Peninsula near the border with Gaza. Hamas is associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, the Egyptian organization of which Morsi was a member. Hamas and the Fatah group, which Abbas heads, are rivals, having fought over control of the Gaza region in 2007.
