Report: Ami Popper Seeks Pardon under PA Criteria

Ami Popper, serving a life sentence for the shooting deaths of seven Gaza Arabs and the wounding of 11 others at the beginning of the 1990s, asked Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to release him in the same way the cabinet approved the release of security prisoners from the Palestinian Authority, according to a Sunday-evening report by Channel 2 Television. Popper claimed he was eligible in the same way as the 104 prisoners to be selected by a ministerial committee.

In 1999, then-president Ezer Weitzmann reduced Popper's sentence to 40 years, making him eligible for release in 2030 if another third is not reduced.
