Elections for Chief Rabbis Underway. Results by 8PM


Elections for the two Chief Rabbis of Israel are taking place Wednesday. The results are expected by 8:00PM. A select group of 150 rabbis, spiritual leaders and community representatives will elect the Ashenazi and Sephardi chief rabbis. The leadership position is for 10 years.

Candidates for Sephardi Chief Rabbi are:
Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef
Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu
and
Rabbi Zion Boaron.

Candidates for Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi are:
Rabbi David Stav
Rabbi David Lau
and
Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro.

The Chief Rabbis will preside over the Rabbinate which is comprised of such departments as: cemeteries and burial, conversion services, holy sites, military chaplains, kosher food certification, mikvot, services for Ethiopian Jewry, wedding related services and more.
