Hamas: Egyptian Tunnel Closures Cost Us $230 Million

Economics Minister Ala Al-Rafati of the Hamas government in Gaza said, Sunday, that the closing of smuggling tunnels from Sinai into Gaza between June 30th and Saturday has caused close to $230 million in damage to the Gaza economy, and continued restrictions on imports via the tunnels could cause the complete collapse of some economic projects in Gaza.

The new Egyptian government, which grew out of the ouster of former president Mohammed Morsi, views Hamas as dangerous because of its support of the Muslim Brotherhood and extremist Islamic organizations in the Sinai Peninsula. Egyptian intelligence has information that Hamas was involved in the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak and an attack in Northern Sinai in which 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed.
