Report: Moshe Leon to Announce Monday for Mayor of J'm

Chairman Moshe Leon of Israel Railways, who was the Director-General of the Prime Minister's Office between 1997 and 1999, has called a news conference for Monday in Jerusalem's Mishkenot Sha'ananim neighborhood, where he is expected to announce that he is running to replace Nir Barkat as mayor of the capital in this fall's elections, according to a Sunday report by the Yisrael Hayom daily.

Leon is considered close to Chairman Avigdor Lieberman of the Yisrael Beyteinu party and, according to different reports, also has the support of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the hareidi-religious parties. A number of hareidi representatives have met with Leon in recent weeks, including the Shas party's Aryeh Der'i, as well as Meir Porush and Moshe Gafni of United Torah Judaism, who said they would stand behind him and support him.
