State to Court: Reject Petition Against Rabbi Eliyahu

The State Attorney's Office told the Supreme Court, Sunday afternoon, to reject the petition of Knesset member Isawi Farij (Meretz) against the candidacy of Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu for Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. The state said the petition was not based on practical evidence of the rabbi being against the sale or rental of property to Arabs, as well as the fact that the selection of the chief rabbi had not yet taken place.

The state said its position was despite an opinion, issued last week by Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein, that Rabbi Eliyahu's candidacy was not appropriate because of expressions attributed to him against the sale or rental of property to Arabs.
