Ashton Requests Morsi's Release

Xinhua reports European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged Wednesday the release of Egypt 's ousted President Mohamed Morsi if there are no charges against him, state-run news agency MENA reported.

After meeting with some top Egyptian officials, Ashton said she has clearly told them that Morsi and all other arrested politicians should be released if there are no charges against them, says Xinhua.

She meanwhile said she was assured that Morsi is safe and well- treated in custody, stressing that the EU wants to see Egypt smoothly heading toward democracy.
