Mayor Eliyahu Shaviro of the western Samarian (Shomron) city of Ariel reacted, Tuesday, to the report of an EU decision banning funding and other cooperation with Jewish entities beyond the 1949 Armistice Line by saying, "My policy as mayor of Ariel is clear and known to all. We are against boycotts of any kind. A boycott does not achieve the stated goal of the boycotter. It also produces more incendiary material for disagreements, and this could very well be the very intention of the European Union initiative."
Shaviro continued, "Whoever wants to bring to bridge gaps and [foster the] brotherhood of man cannot use the invalid tool called boycott. Palestinian residents of Samaria employed by the thousands in Israeli industry, and it is inconceivable to boycott them because of their religion, belief or place of residence. The European Union boycott could spoil even this achievement."
