Wash and Inspect Grapes to Guard against Insects

The Koshrut organization for kashrut observance warned, Monday, of a high incidence of insects among the grapes that were brought to its laboratories. To address the situation, Koshrut recommended that consumers soak grapes in soapy water for about three minutes before eating, then rinse them in running water and check the clusters to make sure the grapes are closed or whole with no black dots or other signs of decay.

Grapes are popular before the Tisha B'Av fast because their sugar breaks down slowly in the body, helping one make it through the fast.
