Arab MK Petitions Against Eliyahu Chief Rabbi Candidacy

Member Knesset Isawi Farij of the leftist Meretz Party plans to file a petition with the Supreme Court, Monday, against the candidacy filed Sunday evening by Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu of Tzfat to be Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. Farij's petition is based on opposition to the sale or rental of property to non-Jews attributed to Rabbi Eliyahu, which was found not to be in violation of the law.

Farij said, in a statement, "I hope the High Court is not afraid to issue a clear and emphatic statement - whoever holds racist views, expresses them in public and incites acts against a whole community of Israel - cannot run for or hold public office, certainly not a high and showcase office, especially one of spiritual leadership that includes judicial powers."
