Demand to Cancel Television Talent Show on Tish'a B'Av

The Tadmit Center for Strengthening Democracy in Media sent a letter to Chairman Ilan Avishar of the Second (Commercial) Broadcasting Authority, Sunday, demanding the cancellation of the X-FACTOR talent audition for youth on Channel 2 Television on the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av (Tish'a B'Av in Hebrew), which commemorates the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem, among other Jewish tragedies. In its letter, Tadmit wrote, "For more than 2,000 years, the Jewish people have observed the ninth of Av as a day of national mourning. The holding of auditions on such a day is a shameful act which hurts the feelings of religion and nationality of a wide public in Israel.

It should be noted that there is no law banning the broadcast of entertainment programs on Tisha B'Av. In 1997 a law was passed to declare the date one of national mourning, banning the opening of places of entertainment. Restaurants in predominantly secular Tel Aviv have been known to open.
