Bill: Memorial Day for Jewish Refugees from Arab Lands

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation endorsed, Sunday, a bill by Member of Knesset Shim'on Ohayon (Yisrael Beyteinu) to make February 17th a national day for the 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab lands who were forced to leave or escaped from these countries, starting in 1947, following the imposition of serious economic and social sanctions against them with the establishment of the modern state of Israel.

A statement by Yisrael Beyteinu said the date was chosen because it was the date in 1948 when the Arab League approved a law for its member states placing severe sanctions against their Jewish populations." Dr. Ohayon sent an official letter to Secretary-General Nabil Al-Araby of the Arab League, calling on the organization "to take responsibility and accountability for the humiliation, the suffering and the losses to innocent Jews when the Arab world declared war on the state of Israel."
