Lieutenant Colonel Itai Sa'ar, who commands the personnel squadron at the Haifa Naval Base, said, Thursday, that Gaza represents the most significant center of activity for the Navy, according to the Israel Defense Forces Website. Presenting a security review, he noted that Israel expanded the area in which fisherman from the Hamas-ruled area are permitted to fish and the Navy is still dealing with terror activity there.
Sa'ar said it has not yet been decided who will secure Israel's strategic offshore oil rigs, noting they encompass an area equal to or greater than the state. He said the Navy is busy with missions of all sizes, including the prevention of weapons smuggling. He recalled the 2002 seizure of the Palestinian Authority ship Karine A, which carried enough weapons for a month of fighting in Lebanon.
