NGO Monitor called for more transparency in how non-governmental organizations are funded. In a statement on Wednesday the group said that such groups are waging "political warfare against Israel - including lawfare, BDS (the boycott, divestment and sanctions), Holocaust denial, false allegations of "war crimes" and other forms of delegitimization." They said the Israeli government's new bill should be carefully drafted so as not to discriminate based on political ideology but rather make it clear who is sending money to whom to avoid any unintended consequences. NGO Monitor said that "European governments and other enablers" are supporting biased groups in Israel.
On Wednesday, MKs Ayelet Shaked (Bayit Yehudi) and Robert Ilatov (Likud Beyteinu) drafted a bill to protect Israel from foreign interference.
The bill would impose strict limits on funding for far-left Israeli NGOs from foreign governments. NGOs such as Breaking the Silence, Ir Amim, and many others currently receive millions each year from European governments.
