Leftists: Oust Jewish Home for Supporting Rabbi Eliyahu

Thirty leftists, including intellectuals and actors, some of them Israel Prize winners, have signed a petition addressed to the heads of coalition parties, calling for the removal of Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party) from the government over the party's support for Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu as Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, according to a Tuesday-morning report by Yisrael Hayom. The opposition is based on Rabbi Eliyahu going on record as opposed to renting or selling property to non-Jews.

Among other things written under the title "Black Flag" was the sentence "We must act toward Habayit Hayehudi as we demanded that Austria behave toward Jörg  Haider." Based on nationalist, anti-immigration and anti-European Union views, Haider's coalition was shunned by the EU when his Austrian Freedom Party and the People's party formed the government in 2000.
