Secretary-General Danny Hirschberg of the Bnei-Akiva religious youth group called on its members, this week, to mark the beginning of the Jewish month of Av (Rosh Chodesh Av) by disconnecting from their cellular phones. The days leading up to the Tisha B'Av (Ninth of Av) anniversary of the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem are laden with a lessening of pleasures.
Hirschberg, who is active in social media, sought to set an example. Writing on his Facebook page, Hirschberg declared a cellular fast, asking members of the movement to join him in not being reachable via the device, which is a work tool for him. He added, "Yes, I know that there are those for whom it will be harder than fasting on Tisha B'Av, but it won't hurt us [to go] one day without mobile devices. I have nothing against cellular but one day without it can return the correct proportions to all of our lives. Let's prove to ourselves that we can look at the other things around us for one day."
