Rabbi Yitzchak David Grossman Not Running for Top Spot

Chief Rabbi Yitzchak David Grossman of Migdal Ha'emek, near Haifa, announced, Monday morning, that he has decided not to run for Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel. Rabbi Grossman had been one of the leading hareidi-religious candidates for the position and was given a good chance to win the complex election, but was advised not to do so by a number of great rabbis.

There is speculation that the decision may have been predicated by the questioning of Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger on corruption charges and the investigation's impact on the makeup of the committee that will select the chief rabbi. The two remaining rabbis in the contest for Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi are Rabbi David Stav, head of the Tzohar rabbinical organization, and Rabbi David Lau, son of former Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau.
